MDC Journalism Speaker Series Presents Miami Herald and El Nuevo Herald Sports Editor Alex Mena March 4

Miami, Feb. 25, 2019 – Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Journalism Speaker Series presents Miami Herald and El Nuevo Herald sports editor Alex Mena at 11 a.m., Monday, March 4, at MDC’s North Campus.

Mena oversees sports coverage for the Miami Herald and El Nuevo Herald as sports editor. He is also in charge of McClatchy’s sports breaking news team in the southeast region. Prior to his current position, he was the Miami Herald’s news editor for four years.

During his more than 25 years in journalism, including a stint at the Sun-Sentinel in Fort Lauderdale, Mena has a served in a variety of roles including: deputy sports editor, assistant sports editor, newsroom night time operations chief, copy editor, designer and clerk.  Mena has a bachelor’s degree in political science from Florida International University (FIU) and an associate’s degree in political science from MDC’s North Campus. He is a member of FIU’s student media board.

The MDC Journalism Speaker Series was launched in February 2008 to create an exchange and learning opportunity for students interested in pursuing careers in journalism. To date, 62 journalists have participated in the series.

This year’s series will also feature New York Times Miami bureau chief Patricia Mazzei, WLRN news anchor and talk show host Luis Hernandez, and CBS4 news anchor and MDC alumnus Eliott Rodriguez.

The program includes a presentation by journalists followed by a question and answer session. All presentations are free and open to the public.
