MDC Campus Galleries of Art + Design to Collaborate with the Confucius Institute at MDC to Present Reshuffling the Past: New Ink Paintings from China

Miami, August 11, 2015 – The Miami Dade College (MDC) Campus Galleries of Art + Design in collaboration with the Confucius Institute (CI) at MDC present the exhibition, Reshuffling the Past: New Ink Paintings from China, Aug. 26 – Nov. 7 at the Wolfson Campus Centre Gallery.  The opening reception will be Sept. 2, at noon.

The exhibition includes 37 works by eight contemporary Chinese artists working on rice paper using ink.  The artists share in their dedication to return to the original unique properties of ink art. However traditional paper and ink may seem, these artists and their works are anything but strictly “traditional”.

“We are very excited about this unique Chinese art exhibition, as it will enhance our efforts in promoting the advancement and appreciation of the Asian arts and culture, thus contributing to the richness of the south Florida multicultural community,” said Dr. Jim Yu, Director of the Confucius Institute at MDC. “We are proud that MDC is one of only three US colleges being selected to host this world-class contemporary Chinese art exhibition.”

The exhibition was supported by Confucius Institute/Hanban, whose headquarters are in Beijing. Dr. Jin Weihong, chief-editor of Art monthly in China, who has traveled to the University of Maryland and Binghamton University in New York, is the curator of the exhibition.

This group of eight artists in the exhibition grew up in the 1950s and 1960s, and the influence of Western art is visible in their art; but they share in the awareness of the relationship between the great Chinese tradition of brush and ink.  Through their efforts, ink art today stands as a shining example in the development of contemporary art in China.

“This exhibition is very strong and promises to delight visitors both with the iconography and tour-de- force techniques”, according to Wanda Texon, Director of the MDC Campus Galleries of Art + Design. ”We are fortunate to have this available for students, faculty and the public.”

Confucius Institute will provide Chinese calligraphy and other cultural programs at the opening reception of the exhibition on Sept. 2. CI is also sponsoring the Miami visit of one or two artists who will travel from Beijing during the run of the exhibition. CI has contributed to the cultural life of the campuses and local community by hosting and sponsoring various exhibitions and cultural programs at MDC.
