Maker Faire Miami Returns to Miami Dade College, April 7 – 8

Miami, March 22, 2018 – Once again, Miami Dade College (MDC), in partnership with MANO Americas and in association with John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, Santander Universities and Maker Media, will host Maker Faire Miami on Saturday and Sunday, April 7 – 8, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., at its Wolfson Campus in downtown Miami. The event will feature inventions and interactive exhibits across the spectrum of science, engineering, art, performance and craft.

Maker Faire Miami is a festival of innovation, creativity and resourcefulness for all ages that celebrates the global Maker Movement. Now, with Maker Faire Miami at MDC for a second straight year, our city is joining an elite band of 35 cities around the world to host larger-scale Maker Faires including Rome, Paris, Tokyo, Atlanta, New York and Shenzhen.

This year’s exhibitors include True 3D Solutions, a company that scans objects that range from full-sized vehicles to small-scale clay models; KidsRobotAcademy, that nurtures future inventors and innovators in the field of robotics: and Codella, which will present a variety of interactive workshops to introduce students to design thinking and coding.

Attendees can learn about XT Synth, a new musical instrument that allows string players to make electronic music without having to learn a new skill set. The XT Synth has the expression of a violin, the playability of a guitar and the power of MIDI controller. Learn about H2Flo, a company that is developing revolutionary smart water meter that will allow homeowners to be alerted of water leaks and water consumption in real time.

Enjoy home grown delights from Miami native Cristina Ivory, who will showcase her locally sourced Angry Booch kombucha; taste Miami bean-to-bar chocolate bars made using cacao beans sourced from small farmers around the world at Cao Chocolates; and Jose Rovira, owner of Paleta305, will share all-natural ice pops that are locally sourced with natural ingredients.

Visitors can also learn how to eliminate plastic bottles by creating a homemade seltzer water system, view magnetic building toys for children, or check out a human powered snow cone machine that operates solely by a person running on an eight-foot hamster wheel.

Dynamic speakers will offer inventive and thought-provoking discussions on the changing landscape for innovators.  Neal Gorenflo, Executive Director of Shareable will speak about Sharing Cities: Activating the Urban Commons on Saturday, April 7 at 2 p.m.  Join Torben Friehe, Founder of 1Aim and Co-founder of Good Technology Collective, for his talk on Ethics in Engineering Artificial Intelligence on Sunday, April 8 at 2 p.m.
