Kick Back and Relax at The Porch, the Ultimate Outdoor Hangout Space Presented by MDC’s Miami Book Fair

Miami, Oct. 24, 2019 – Miami Dade College’s (MDC) 36th Miami Book Fair, Nov. 17 – 24, will once again celebrate everything Miami at The Porch, the ultimate outdoor hangout space. Enjoy live music, performances, craft beer, silent poetry disco, games, meditation, and so much more. The Porch opens Friday, Nov. 22, and will remain open throughout the weekend Street Fair (Nov. 22 – 24).

Located at the corner of N.E. Second Ave. and N.E. Third St., The Porch is sponsored by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the Miami DDA, Geico and Baptist Health.  All events at The Porch are free with admission to the Street Fair.

Happenings at The Porch:

Friday, Nov. 22

6 p.m., The Porch kicks off with a free community BBQ and spirits courtesy of BACARDI USA. Also enjoy  giant outdoor games, a community coloring wall, silent poetry disco curated by the Academy of American Poets, an outdoor photo exhibit of South Beach in the 70s as seen through the lens of American photographer Andy Sweet, and performances by Latin Grammy-nominated producer/DJ Mr. Pauer spinning his unique Miami sound, “Electrópico,” and an explosive performance by Miami funk/pop band Los Wizzards.

Saturday, Nov. 23

*Included with admission to the weekend Street Fair, from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. Entry fees: $10 general admission; $5 for ages 13 – 18 and over 62; 12 and under free.

11 a.m., Guided Meditation with MindfulNikki

12 p.m., World Music with DJ Ma Non Troppo & Inez Barlatier

1 p.m., Exchange for Change readings of poems from prison

2 p.m., Funk, rock, soul and jazz with Electric Kif

3 p.m., South Florida’s longest running, live storytelling event, Lip Service

4 p.m., Miami-based Gypsy Latin Band, Tamboka

5 p.m., Cage fight meets poetry slam with Literary Death Match

7 p.m., The Rock Bottom Remainders, a band featuring some of today’s brightest literary lights

Ongoing Activities: Silent poetry disco, exquisite corpse creative writing activity, letterpress printing by Tom Virgin, and DJ Carlos Menendez.

Sunday, Nov. 24

1 p.m., Shtetl in the Sun: Andy Sweet’s South Beach 1977-1980

2 p.m., Hip-hop grooves meet slinky Cajun beats with Lemon City Trio

3 p.m., Nerd Nite Miami – It’s like Discovery Channel … with beer!

4 p.m., Xperimento mixes sounds from around the world including Cumbia, Reggae, Ska and more

5 p.m., Penguin Classic and MBF Version of Screw, Marry or Kill

6 p.m., Live music by Miami’s avant-dance duo Afrobeta
