Governor Scott Announces Appointments and Reappointments to Miami Dade College’s Board of Trustees

Miami, March 5, 2018 –  Florida Governor Rick Scott has announced the appointments and reappointments of Trustees at Miami Dade College (MDC). Joining the Board are Jose K. Fuentes, who previously served on MDC’s Board, and Juan C. Zapata. Reappointed to the Board are Marili Cancio and Bernie Navarro. They join current Trustees Daniel Diaz Leyva and Benjamin Leon III. MDC thanks outgoing Trustees Armando Bucelo Jr. and Armando Olivera, whose terms expired, for their longstanding, exemplary service to the college and its students.

Marili Cancio, of Key Biscayne, is the owner of Marili Cancio & Johnson P.A. She received her bachelor’s degree from Eastern University and her juris doctor degree from Temple University.

Bernie Navarro, of Miami, is the president of Benworth Capital Partners. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Miami and his master’s degree from Harvard University.

Jose K. Fuentes, of Miami, is a government relations representative with Becker & Poliakoff, P.A. An MDC alumnus, he received his bachelor’s degree from St. Thomas University.

Juan C. Zapata, of Miami, is the owner of Zapata Consulting. He previously served as a Member of the Florida House of Representatives and as a Miami-Dade County Commissioner. Also an MDC alumnus, he received his bachelor’s degree from Florida International University and his master’s degree from Harvard University.

These appointments are subject to final confirmation by the Florida Senate.
