Exciting Cultural Events on the Calendar of Prestigious Confucius Institute at Miami Dade College

Miami, February 12, 2013The Confucius Institute (CI) at Miami Dade Collegewill be celebrating the Chinese New Year with a host of cultural and academic events, throughout the month of February.  2013 marks the Year of the Snake, and although characterized as “mysterious,” these upcoming events will clearly be a treat as one discovers the traditions of this ancient civilization.

The Cultures of China & Festival of Spring, led by the world-renowned Zhanyou Art Troupe, will bring a world-class, colorfully-rich, performance direct from China. This unique display of Chinese folk dance, operatic singing, instrumental music, and comedy will take place on Friday, Feb. 15, at 8 p.m. at the Olympia Theater at Gusman Center, 174 E Flagler Street, Miami, FL.  Ticket prices: $20, $30, $40, $50, $100.  To purchase tickets, visit http://www.gusmancenter.org/events/

The Second Annual Mini-Conference on Chinese Migration to the Caribbean Basin will take place on Saturday, Feb. 16, 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. at MDC’s Kendall Campus, 11011 SW 104 Street, Miami, FL, Room 402. Sponsored in collaboration with Chinese Cultural Foundation (Miami), renowned scholars and Chinese community leaders from Canada, Jamaica, Panama and Miami will attend this free event, open to the public.

The 2013 Chinese New Year Festival, scheduled to take place on Sunday, Feb. 17, between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m., at MDC’s Kendall Campus,11011 SW 104 Street, Miami, FL, will feature Asian food, art and crafts, games and prizes for families and children. CI will provide Chinese calligraphy demonstrations, Tai Chi performances, and a fashion show. More than 7,000 people attend the event each year, making it one of the largest Chinese New Year festivals in our region. Tickets: adults $10.00, children under 12, $5.00. CI will also be coordinating MDC’s second training program for 28 vocational school principals from China’s Heilongjiang Province, Feb. 25-28. The Chinese delegation will visit the College’s Wolfson, North, and InterAmerican campuses, as well as MDC’s Aviation School at Miami International Airport, and Miami-Dade Public School’s Career and Technical Education Center. MDC and community experts will provide seminars and workshops on vocational education and workforce training.
