CNN Hero Jorge Muñoz to be Keynote Speaker at Miami Dade College’s Physician Assistant Pinning Ceremony Aug. 3

Miami, July 24, 2018- Miami Dade College (MDC) will host CNN Hero Jorge Muñoz as the keynote speaker at the Physician Assistant Pinning Ceremony at 1 p.m., Friday, Aug. 3, at MDC’s Wolfson Campus in downtown Miami.

Since 2004, Jorge Muñoz has handed out free meals from his mobile soup kitchen in Queens, New York. In 2009, he was selected by CNN viewers as one of the most remarkable individuals for his sacrifices and accomplishments.  He received $25,000 and was selected in the Top 10 CNN Heroes of 2009.

Muñoz shares with the Physician Assistant Program (PA) the value of service to under-privileged communities and reinforces its goal to provide and holistic care for all.  He exemplifies the impact that one individual can make on the community.  The mission of the PA Program is to provide high quality education and training opportunities in primary care for students from diverse cultural backgrounds interested in providing health care services to the medically under-served residents in urban and rural communities, especially in Florida. Muñoz reflects the PA program’s mission to provide services to the undeserved despite financial, environmental, language, and other barriers.

The PA program was honored in 2016 and 2017 with the Gold category of the Presidential Volunteer Service Award.  Despite a rigorous two-year medical curriculum, the PA students completed more than 1,000 hours of service in the South Florida community with several organizations, including the MDC-MAC Project SEED, a service learning project for migrant farm workers.
