Documentary Film Screening and Panel Discussion at MDC’s Iconic Tower Theater
Miami, Aug. 8, 2016 – Americans for Immigrant Justice (AI Justice) presents Dream: An American Story, an award-winning feature-length documentary film which chronicles the life of MDC graduate and former top student Juan Gomez on Monday, Aug. 29 at 5:30 p.m., at Miami Dade College’s (MDC) acclaimed Tower Theater.
Academically gifted, Juan Gomez firmly believes in the philosophy and promise of the American Dream. Facing separation from his parents, and caught in the midst of a dysfunctional immigration system and a deadlocked Congress, this dedicated and hardworking undocumented immigrant struggles to remain in the United States, the only country he has ever known. The film will be preceded by a reception and a panel discussion will take place following the screening.
The U.S. Supreme Court’s 4-4 decision in US v. Texas represents that millions of families will remain in limbo. The 2016 presidential election further heightens the fear of those who are currently protected from deportation by Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), known as DREAMers and families who would be shielded from deportation and separation by Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents (DAPA). AI Justice will highlight the plight of DREAMers at this crucial time in history when so much is at stake in the upcoming elections and anti-immigrant rhetoric permeates the airwaves. AI Justice seeks to inform the community about the need for immigration reform, and to encourage civic engagement.
Panelists will include the award-winning filmmaker Aldo Bello, former Miami mayor Manny Diaz, and prominent DREAMer, immigrant rights advocate, and MDC graduate Gaby Pacheco. AI Justice’s Executive Director, Cheryl Little will moderate the panel.
Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at www.aijustice.org. A limited number of underwritten tickets are available for MDC students and DREAMers.
