New World School of the Arts returns to the iconic Arsht Center for the Performing Arts to celebrate its annual NWSA Symphony Orchestra Concert as it welcomes the new orchestra conductor, Dr. Hyunjee Chung. Playing alongside the music students will be featured guest soloist, British cellist Colin Carr, while the orchestra will perform Vasily Kalinnikov’s Symphony No. 1. Dr. Chung chose to perform this work for its heartfelt melodies and expressive qualities.
Prior to her appointment at NWSA, Dr. Chung was a violin instructor at Boston University College of Fine Arts, and at the Boston String Academy. “Dr. Chung’s performing career has taken her to different parts of the world to work with great artists in the field,” said Dr. Daniel Andai, Dean of Music at New World School of the Arts. “This impressive level of expertise brings a fresh and exciting approach to our students who benefit from her artistic interpretations of works performed both as a conductor on the podium and as a violinist.”
Colin Carr will offer a masterclass to South Florida cello students during Cello Lab Miami, on Saturday, March 5; 8:30 AM. A weekend of all things cello, this 3rd installment of the workshop is directed by NWSA faculty member Dr. Bryan Hayslett. The annual Cello Lab Miami includes ensemble rehearsals and concert, presentations, and an exhibition of cello prizes. The weekend program culminates with a cello orchestra concert featuring every participant, directed by Dr. Andai, with faculty member Dr. Megan Barrera as a featured singer. The concert repertoire includes music by living composers, an important part of the NWSA music division’s mission.
Originally from Seoul, South Korea, Dr. Hyunjee Chung – Assistant Professor of Violin and Conductor, excels as a recitalist, chamber musician, and educator. As a soloist, Dr. Chung made her debut with the Seoul National Symphony in 2010. At NWSA, she heads up two full symphony orchestras, a chamber orchestra, and a string ensemble. Dr. Chung’s vision for all the orchestras is to emulate the great chamber orchestras with which she’s had the privilege of playing, where each member is responsible for an equal share of the music-making. Dr. Chung has a robust history as a performer and collaborates on a regular basis with members of such prestigious institutions as Musicians from Marlboro, Vienna Philharmonic, Berliner Philharmoniker, and Tonhalle-Orchester Zurich. She has been a regular member of the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra since 2017, and has performed in residencies at Schloss Elmau, Tsinandali Festival, and in their concert tour of Hong Kong, China, and Dubai.
Internationally known and highly regarded on both sides of the Atlantic, Carr is a chamber musician, recording artist, and teacher who has gained admiration for performances of soul-bearing introspection and searing intensity. Carr boasts a firm and reliable technique and can be counted on for interpretations that spare neither sense nor sound. He has played with major orchestras around.
Dr. Hayslett made his Carnegie Hall debut in 2009 as first prize winner of the Alexander & Buono International String Competition and returned the following year as a repeat top prize laureate. He has taught as adjunct artist faculty at NYU Steinhardt and served as the cellist of contemporary performance group Juxtatonal. Dr. Hayslett is a proponent of new music, having founded and participated in the Semiosis Quartet and several new music chamber groups in the New England area. Dr. Hayslett can be heard on an Innova recording, “A Special Light,” featuring music of David Macbride. As a scholar, Dr. Hayslett’s research focuses on temporality in the music of Lee Hyla, and his PhD dissertation develops an analytical framework based on linguistics to analyze structure in Hyla’s music.
The academic music curriculum fosters creativity and develops a knowledge of musical heritage. Course work develops the student’s growth and maturity in comprehensive musicianship. The study of music history and theory is pursued by taking a variety of classes, including foundations of music; surveys of music history in the western world, jazz and pop music in America, and music of the world’s people; and seminars in composition aesthetics, jazz improvisation, chamber music, and general musicianship. Students receive private lessons each term. The Private Lesson program offered by the music division is unique. Each student has the privilege of studying on a one-on-one basis with the New World artist faculty. Rigorous daily practice and preparation is expected of each student with their progress closely monitored.
