New World School of the Arts will ring in the holiday season with thirty-three high school music theater students presenting the popular musical Cinderella, by Oscar Hammerstein with music by Richard Rodgers, under the direction of Maggie Maxwell, faculty member and NWSA theater alumna.

“When I first found out that I was directing Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella, I was ecstatic as this has always been a childhood favorite of mine. My team and I wanted to create a story in which the audience is ushered into the world of a pop-up storybook – symbolic of the fantastical and whimsical nature of the show. Cinderella tells the story of a girl who is brave, kind, and has an impact in her kingdom through love, friendship, and kindness,” explained Maxwell.
Originally written as a television musical in 1957, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s telling of Cinderella has had various stage and television adaptations. In 2013, playwright Douglas Carter Beane’s updated new version of Cinderella premiered on Broadway, with the story and score tweaked for modern audiences. In this interpretation, audiences will follow Ella as she impacts her kingdom through advocacy, displaying kindness, killer dance moves, and a magical dress with glass slippers to match!

Our incredibly talented and diverse magnet school cast brings their own spin to the fable we all know and love,” said Alan Patrick Kenny, Dean of Theater.
The New World School of the Arts theater program is dedicated to the professional training of talented and committed students interested in pursuing a performing career in theater and music theater, offering students an opportunity to work in a hands-on intensive, physically demanding, artistically challenging and exciting environment. Guided by faculty who are professional actors, directors, playwrights and designers, the curriculum is a progressive journey toward the ownership of a personal technique and a comprehensive methodology of working. The faculty guides the student through the discovery and exploration of self, the learning of diverse techniques used in our craft, intensive rehearsal process, and finally the application of this knowledge into dramatic forms and styles in productions.
