Miami, Sept. 14, 2020 – Miami Dade College (MDC) will celebrate Constitution Day, Thursday, Sept. 17, with a variety of virtual events and activities to help students and the community better understand the most important document in American History and how it has shaped our lives. All events are free and open to the public.
Constitution Day is a federal observance recognizing the country’s citizens, as well as the day the U.S. Constitutional Convention signed the Constitution on Sept. 17, 1787.
MDC Constitution Day activities:
North Campus
10 a.m. – 11 a.m. Constitution Day: Make History. Vote for Your Future
A panel discussion about the history and the power of the vote. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions, reflect on what it means to be a U.S. citizen, receive important information on voter registration and community engagement. Speakers will include North Campus Student Government President Michael Cruz; Social Sciences Professor Robert Morris Jr., and students at the Institute for Civic Engagement and Democracy (iCED).

Padrón Campus
10 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. In God We Trust: Faith Diversity and the Future of the American Republic
Guest speakers will include Judge Norman Hemming, Judge Alberto Milian, MDC Jaffer Institute Director Dr. Homayoun-Vash, and other MDC faculty members. Padrón Campus Social Sciences Chair Richard Tapia will serve as moderator. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions on a variety of constitutional issues and receive a copy of the U.S. Constitution.

11:15 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Constitution Day
A panel of community experts will address the Amendments of the Constitution that address voting. The event will celebrate the centennial of Women’s Suffrage and conclude with a call to action to register to vote and practice their constitutional rights in this year’s upcoming election.
