The Miami Marlins continue their commitment to serve the youth of South Florida with a $30,000 donation to Miami Dade College (MDC) through the support of Marlins ownership to establish the Miami Marlins First Generation Scholarship Endowment. The program will provide financial support to qualified undergraduate MDC students who are the first in their families to attend college. The endowment generates student awards for scholarships in perpetuity.
MDC is the most diverse institution in the nation and serves more than 120,000 students. The college’s eight campuses and outreach centers offer more than 300 distinct degree pathways including associate and baccalaureate degrees, career certificates and apprenticeships.
“With a commitment to empower South Florida youth, we are excited to partner with Miami Dade College to provide support and opportunities to deserving individuals from our community,” said Raquel “Rocky” Egusquiza, Executive Director of Miami Marlins Foundation. “Many of our community’s leaders have graduated from Miami Dade College, and we want for that tradition to carry on for years to come.”
“We are thrilled to receive this generous gift from the Miami Marlins that will surely contribute to the success of our students for years to come,” said MDC Interim President Dr. Rolando Montoya. “Being first in your family to obtain a college degree is a life-changing accomplishment and has the potential to inspire others to do the same.”
The announcement was made following yesterday’s Miami Marlins’ MDC Day, a virtual pregame event for all MDC students, faculty, staff, alumni, and more. The special event was held in advance of I AM MDC Day, which is celebrated every year on September 6, the day MDC first opened its doors 60 years ago. I AM MDC Day celebrates MDC’s rich tradition of elevating the community and changing lives through education and opportunity. The day of giving and school pride also raises critical funds for scholarships and programs for students. In 2019, a record total of $2 million was raised on I AM MDC Day!
