Miami Dade College Joins YWCA South Florida’s 21-Day Racial Equity and Social Justice Challenge

Miami, June 23, 2020Miami Dade College (MDC) is joining the YWCA South Florida’s 21-Day Racial Equity and Social Justice Challenge from June 29 to July 27 to continue the important work of achieving racial equity in our communities. As an Ashoka U designated Changemaker Campus, MDC contributes to the community’s positive impact by preparing its students and employees to tackle issues with empathy, reflection, action, and resilience.

Based on the notion that it takes 21 days to change a habit, the Challenge is designed to create dedicated time and space to build more effective social justice habits, particularly those dealing with issues of race, power, privilege, and leadership. Participants are presented with daily challenges related to voting, criminal justice reform, education and public health.

Each morning during the Challenge, participants will receive an email inviting them to either listen to a podcast, read a specific article, or reflect on a question – all designed to open minds, invite new learning, or question old assumptions. The intent is to create a moment in the day of personal reflection.

For those wanting to take part in a dialogue with others, the YWCA South Florida will host a private Facebook forum for participants. MDC will also invite all Challenge members to join closed groups for additional information, support, and connection. Participation in these optional groups is not a required part of this meaningful program.

The Challenge was introduced last year by YWCA Cleveland and their impact and success with the campaign has become a model for YWCAs nationwide. The generous support of partner Kaufman Rossin allowed YWCA South Florida to bring the Challenge to the South Florida community.

YWCA South Florida is a chapter of YWCA USA, a nonprofit dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all. It is one of the oldest and largest women’s organizations in the nation, serving over 2 million women, girls, and their families.  YWCA has been at the forefront of the most pressing social movements for more than 160 years — from voting rights to civil rights, from affordable housing to pay equity, from violence prevention to health care reform. Today, it combines programming and advocacy to generate institutional change in three key areas: racial justice and civil rights, empowerment and economic advancement of women and girls, and health and safety of women and girls.
