MIAMI, March 11, 2020 – Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Journalism Speaker Series presents Miami Herald municipal reporter Joey Flechas at 11 a.m., Friday, March 20, at MDC’s North Campus.
Flechas, who covers government and public affairs in the city of Miami, takes readers from city hall to the news happening in their neighborhood. He previously covered the cities of Miami Beach, Doral, Hialeah and Coral Gables and won a Sunshine State Award for revealing a Miami Beach political candidate’s ties to an illegal campaign donation. A graduate of the University of Florida, Flechas served as editor-in-chief of The Independent Florida Alligator in Gainesville.
His work has also appeared in the St. Petersburg Times, The Washington Examiner and the Gainesville Sun.
The MDC Journalism Speaker Series launched in Feb. 2008 to create an exchange and learning opportunity for students interested in pursuing careers in journalism. To date, more than 66 journalists have participated in the series. The program includes a presentation by the journalist followed by a question and answer session. All presentations are free and open to the public.
Other speakers this year will include CBS4 news anchor Frances Wang, WLRN education reporter Jessica Bakeman and Lazaro Gamio, a graphics editor at The New York Times, among others.
