MIAMI, March 11, 2020- Miami Dade College (MDC) Carrie P. Meek Entrepreneurial Education Center will host the Florida premiere viewing of Swing State Florida: Liberty City, a documentary by filmmaker Sam George of the Bertelsmann Foundation, at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 21.
“Allowing the youth to participate in the conversations to build strong communities in Miami is an important step towards future growth and development in Liberty City,” said Dr. Malou C. Harrison, President of the Padron and North Campuses. “Liberty City has a rich history of excellence and strife that depicts a resilience that young people must be aware of to create a continued spirit of tenacity.”
T. Willard Fair, President and CEO of the Urban League of Greater Miami and Dorothy Fields, historian and founder of Miami’s Black Archives will inaugurate the event with opening remarks and reflections. Local radio personality, Rodney Baltimore of Hot 105 FM, will moderate a panel discussion with community leaders and audience.
The documentary traces the history from the segregated Liberty City in the 1930s to contemporary challenges faced by the community today. Filmmaker Sam George highlights community-led efforts by Ivy Bennett’s Wall (In) Project, the Circle of Brotherhood, and a dynamic group of local teenagers to encourage civil society in inner city Miami. The film follows the dynamic teens as they build a public monument, under Ivy Bennett’s Wall (In) Project. The monument allows the teens to contribute their creativity to the history of Liberty City’s segregation wall that once divided blacks and whites in the community.
