MIAMI, March 9, 2020 – Miami Dade College’s (MDC) North Campus Actors Arena will present “Insultos al Público” (Offending the Audience), by Peter Handke, a novelist and playwright who was awarded a Nobel Prize in Literature 2019, March 27 through March 29. This Spanish-language play is free and open to the public.
Under the direction of Yoshvani Medina, Offending the Audience has no plot. No story is being told at all, instead the audience is made aware that what they see is not a representation of anything else but is in fact quite literal. The actors continuously repeat the point that this is not a play, and that nothing theatrical will happen. It is sometimes called an “anti-play” because of its renouncements of theatricality.
The idea of making a work without characters, without plot, without history, where the public is insulted for 90 consecutive minutes, sounds like sacrilege, desecration, mockery. The result is an irresistible black comedy that undulates between poetry and cynicism, between humanism and animal nature.
