Miami, Nov. 14, 2019 – Miami Dade College’s (MDC) world-renowned Miami Book Fair (MBF) opens its star-studded 36th edition at the Wolfson Campus Sunday, Nov. 17 with exciting programs featuring Pulitzer Prize winning author and diplomat Samantha Power who will discuss her memoir, The Education of an Idealist with journalist and author, Ana Menendez.

Samantha Power is the Professor of the Practice of Global Leadership and Public Policy at Harvard Kennedy School and Professor of Practice in Human Rights at Harvard Law School. She served in the Cabinet of President Barack Obama and as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations (2013-2017). From 2009 to 2013, Power worked on the National Security Council as Special Assistant to the President for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights. Power began her career as a journalist reporting from countries including Bosnia, East Timor, Rwanda, and Sudan. She is the recipient of a Pulitzer Prize, and she has been named by TIME as one of the world’s 100 Most Influential People and by Forbes as one of the World’s 100 Most Powerful Women. In her memoir, The Education of an Idealist (Dey Street Books), Power offers an answer to the question “What can one person do?” while tracing a distinctly American journey from immigrant, to war correspondent, to presidential cabinet official. Secretary of State Madeline Albright said that Power’s “[…] absorbing, heartfelt, and remarkably candid memoir offers essential lessons to anyone aspiring to follow in her footsteps in shaping the world for the better.”
4 p.m., Una Tarde Con Gioconda Belli, MDC’s Wolfson Campus Auditorium (Room 1261)
The Ibero-American Authors Program opens the 36th edition of the Miami Book Fair featuring award-winning Nicaraguan novelist and poet, Gioconda Belli. The author of La mujer habitada, El infinito en la palma de la mano, and El país de las mujeres bring us her most recent novel, Las fiebres de la memoria (Planeta). A story of love, mystery and adventure which show us is never too late to reinvent oneself, find a new destiny and love passionately. Belli will discuss her most recent work with writer and journalist, Gina Montaner.
5 p.m., Miami Book Fair Opens with One Swingin’ Paella Party! Atrium (Bldg. 1, 1st Floor)
If you haven’t tried traditional Paella Valenciana, here’s your chance, courtesy of The Paella King. Special thanks to Biscayne Bay Brewing for the cold beverages.
6 p.m., Special performance by French Horn Collective
Led by Parisian musician (multi-instrumentalist, composer, singer, and songwriter) Vincent Raffard, French Horn Collective is a shape-shifting ensemble featuring a high energy mix of gypsy jazz, traditional jazz, blues, and modern French music.
