Bettie Thompson helped cultivate a culture of philanthropy among her colleagues for more than two decades. Like many MDC employees, Thompson was first drawn to the College for its commitment to offering an open door to anyone seeking an education, regardless of race or economic background. The fervor she developed for MDC’s mission and vision would be just the start of her contributions to MDC.
Soon she was tasked with encouraging her colleagues to join her in support of MDC Foundation and other community organizations in South Florida as the manager of the annual MDC United Way Campaign for employees. Over 20 years, she led annual campaigns that raised more than $1.2 million.
“I saw firsthand how the money raised by College employees significantly improved the College’s ability to secure more, and larger, private donations to support our students,” said Thompson. “That’s what really motivated me to continue my contributions – even in my retirement.”
Thompson’s passion for access and equality led her to support of the Lessie Graham Pryor Nursing Scholarship Fund and the College’s efforts to increase enrollment of minority students in nursing. She applauds the College’s efforts over the years to become the nation’s most diverse institution of higher learning.
