Miami Dade College to Celebrate Chinese New Year

Miami, Feb. 4, 2019Miami Dade College (MDC) will celebrate the Chinese Lunar New Year, the Year of Pig, with an array of cultural events throughout February. With a commitment to provide cultural enrichment opportunities for all residents of Miami-Dade County and South Florida, the college will hold activities at four MDC campuses – Medical, Kendall, North, and Hialeah – making it one of the most diverse and colorful Chinese New Year celebrations at MDC.

Highlights of the 2019 celebrations will include traditional and contemporary Chinese performing arts variety shows, such as Chinese folk dances, instrumental music by Chinese violins and zithers, folk and pop songs by Chinese singers, Chinese Tai Chi, martial arts and Yo Yo demonstrations. A special exhibition “Charm of Hangzhou” held at Kendall Campus will feature six artists from Hangzhou, the capital city of Zhejiang Province in southeast China. This exhibition will cover Hangzhou embroidery, fan art, paper umbrella and bamboo paper making, boxwood carving and woodblock printing as part of Hangzhou’s intangible cultural heritage, accompanied by representative artists of that heritage who will demonstrate unique skills and techniques. MDC students of Chinese language learning will join the celebration with interactive activities and Chinese/international fashion shows.

The Chinese New Year this year falls on February 5, which will see the Chinese zodiac sign change from dog to pig, the last animal of the 12 Chinese zodiac signs. The others are rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, and rooster. The Chinese New Year celebrations at MDC the past eight years have enriched the cultural life of Miami Dade College, the largest and most diverse higher education institution in the country.
