Miami, Aug. 30, 2018 – Miami Dade College (MDC) will screen FILM ART EXPANSE – a multi-channel film presentation/performance of rare avant-garde and experimental works in their original formats – Sept. 8, at MDC Live Arts Lab located at MDC’s Wolfson Campus. The event is supported by the Lynn and Louis Wolfson II Florida Moving Image Archives at MDC and MDC Live Arts.
FILM ART EXPANSE, curated by Miami artist Barron Sherer, who is Principal Artist at Obsolete Media Miami (O.M.M.), will present 16mm prints of 45 rare and canonical experimental works from cinema history during Downtown Art Days. The screening is free and open to the public.
MDC Live Arts Lab has been re-purposed for FILM ART EXPANSE, which will showcase the artists’ films on five surfaces. A team of technicians will run the films on 16mm projectors placed inside the theater space, bringing the “expanded cinema” experience to a traditional theater environment. The one-of-a-kind screening is also a survey of essential cinema.
“We’ve worked with Barron Sherer on a number of projects,” said Wolfson Archives Director, Rene Ramos. “His esthetic combines forward vision with an appreciation for media history and legacy technologies. His work fits brilliantly with our mission as an archive.”
Some of the more than 30 featured artists in the screenings include experimental filmmakers Thom Anderson, Storm De Hirsh, Lawrence Jordan, Owen Land, Marie Menken, Lis Rhodes, Walther Ruttmann, Michael Snow and Joyce Weiland. Some film prints will be presented for the first time in Miami. Prints for FILM ART EXPANSE have been sourced from national and international film collectives and distributors.
Collaborators also include artist and exhibition designer Freddy Jouwayed, who has created and installed five floating projection surfaces for the performances. The Wolfson Archives provided funding and managed print traffic for the screening, receiving film prints in advance of the screenings and shipping them back to distributors afterward.
Wolfson Archives events are presented with the support of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners.
