35th Miami Book Fair at MDC
November 11 – 18, 2018
MDC Wolfson Campus
300 N.E. Second Ave.
Miami, Fl. 33132
The Miami Book Fair, a flagship cultural program of Miami Dade College (MDC) and the nation’s largest literary gathering, will celebrate its 35th anniversary Nov. 11 – 18, 2018, at the Wolfson Campus in downtown Miami.
Miami Book Fair will feature more than 500 celebrated authors from the U.S. and around the world reading from new works and participating in discussions on myriad topics. Recognized as one of the most inclusive events in South Florida, and the best book festival in the country, the Fair convenes more than 150,000 people over the course of eight days.
The lively Street Fair during the closing weekend, Nov. 16 – 18, complements the author programs with hundreds of bookseller and publisher booths; Children’s Alley, a pop-up children’s learning activities village boasting a live performance stage; Kitchen Stadium, an outdoor pavilion equipped with a professional kitchen featuring culinary discussions and cooking demos by top chefs; and The Porch, the ultimate urban community hangout, complete with a beer bar, comfy outdoor seating stacked with board games, and a stage for live music and interdisciplinary performance.
Miami’s location makes it the perfect place to celebrate the literary and intellectual life of Ibero-America and the Caribbean. The IberoAmerican Authors and ReadCaribbean programs of the Fair provide a platform for writers from those regions to highlight the vibrant culture and diverse topics in their native languages.
Students in K-12 will enjoy special author presentations and workshops at the Fair and in their schools as part of the Generation Genius program, and college students will meet with selected authors for in-depth discussions on specific subjects as part of the Fair’s Classroom Collaborations program.

At the center of the Dunbar family is Clay, a boy who will build a bridge—for his family, for his past, for greatness, for his sins, for a miracle. The question is, how far is Clay willing to go? There has been a boom in writing about characters between the ages of nine and twelve, which has led to innovative and even monumental works, including Judy Blume’s Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret, John Boyne’s The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, and Jacqueline Woodson’s Brown Girl Dreaming. While the genre offers many possibilities for writers, it also requires very particular skills in creating characters, setting, dialogue, conflict, and resolution. This workshop will examine the different components of the genre in published work and through in-class writing exercises and student-submitted work. Whether you are contemplating writing a middle-grade novel or already have a manuscript draft, this workshop can help you find inspiration and gain tools to strengthen your voice, craft and literary style.

Black Queen Project

Live Arts Lab, MDC Wolfson Campus Bldg 1
300 NE 2nd Ave. Miami FL 33132
Tickets: $10 each, or $25 for a LALA PASS (admission to all 3 Live Arts Lab Alliance programs)
A sonic meditation and surreal encounter between dark myth and true spirit. The medieval queen Barbora of Celje was an intelligent, powerful ruler whose life was rewritten by her enemies as a myth of evil, witchcraft and vampirism. A recent text by a Slovakian historian unveils how— without questioning—the myth was adopted and embellished. In a new collaboration, LALA artist Juraj Kojs and fellow composer/performers Jennifer Beattie and Adam Marks explore Barbora’s story. Uniting medieval melodies, contemporary poetry, real-time electronics and a voice-controlled interactive star ceiling—Black Queen creates moments of magic that reflect contemporary societal struggles. Goth attire welcome.

North Beach Bandshell
7275 Collins Ave
Miami Beach FL 33141

A Syrian wedding singer turned international music sensation. Thanks to his wildly danceable repertoire of dabke and other Middle Eastern electronic folk-pop styles, Souleyman has become a fixture on the music festival circuit—even boasting collaborations with the likes of Bjork and performances for the United Nations. He combines songs of love and desire with driving techno beats performed on a synthesizer for a singular and irresistible sound, and in this concert, plays from his new album To Syria, With Love (out on Diplo’s label, Mad Decent).
“…the music here can compete against any kind of dance music being made right now, and succeed…” –Pitchfork
La Medea
Thursday, Friday & Saturday, Oct 25 – 27, 2018 at 8 p.m.
Sandrell Rivers Theater
6103 NW 7th Ave
Miami FL 33127
Tickets: $35
A Greek tragedy re-imagined as a Latin-disco variety show. Euripides’ myth of the wild foreign woman who vengefully murders her own children is shattered in this genre-bending musical. As a live simulcast and feature film that is directed, performed, shot and edited in real time, La Medea creates a high-stakes vulnerability for cast, crew and audiences alike. Performers and camera operators play the characters, while studio audiences act as the Greek chorus. The reality TV-dramatics reveal not a dangerous outsider—but an infinite woman that rejects the limited gaze imposed on her.

Penny Arcade: Longing Lasts Longer
Friday & Saturday, Nov 9 &10, 2018 at 8 p.m. (additional shows TBA)
MDC Wolfson Campus, Live Arts Lab (Building 1, First floor)
300 NE 2nd Ave
Miami FL 33132
Tickets: $30
A legendary avant-gardist and New York’s undisputed queen of the underground, Penny Arcade’s performance roots stretch back to her days of working with Andy Warhol. Performance artist, writer, poet and experimental theatre-maker Penny Arcade is known for her magnetic stage presence, take-no-prisoners wit and content-rich plays and one-liners. Her willingness to speak truth to power at the expense of career concerns and her efforts to use performance as a transformative act have made her an international icon of artistic resistance. Longing Lasts Longer is a rock n’ roll blend of stand-up comedy and memoir—a fierce, visionary and ultimately hopeful critique of New York’s slide from the “city that never sleeps” to the “city that can’t wake up.”
Dov & Blasting Pixels

A double bill of new multimedia/ theatre works by LALA artists—one exploring coming of age, the other, concept of memory. Dov is a collaborative, solo physical theater work directed by Pioneer Winter for Izzi LieberPerson, who will be performing for the first time. Dov explores Izzi’s transition from a twelve to thirteen-year old, using dance, monologue, and his prodigious basketball skills as soundscore. Through the eyes of a boy who is also becoming, the audience confronts their own childhood and the question of what it means to become and ‘end with a make’. Blending multi-channel projections of real-time feed and video loops with dance performance and live music, Claudio Marcotulli’s Blasting Pixels attempts to explore the concept of memory tied to a personal timeline. Extracted from a 20-year old collection of MiniDV tapes, digitalized memories interact with existential narratives in a theatrical setting. Collaborators include composer Jose Luis de la Paz, dancers Roxana Barba and Liony Garcia; and actor Jose Manuel Dominguez.

Aventura Arts & Cultural Center
3385 NE 188th Street
Aventura, FL 33180

An immersive tribute to the first female Sufi mystic and poet. Born in 8th century Iraq, Rabia Al Basri set forth the doctrines of Divine Love and non-duality that lie at the heart of today’s Sufi mysticism. Though recognized as a saint, her role continues to be diminished in value because she was a woman. Persian electroacoustic duo Niyaz team up with renowned interactive design artist Jerome Delapierre to honor her. They combine live music and sacred dance performance with advanced technologies and responsive projection and body-mapping techniques for a seamless synthesis of sound, space, image and light. The real and the virtual merge—pulling the audience inside the art to share in a unique narrative and multi-sensory spiritual experience.

Award-winning poet/performer Marc Bamuthi Joseph delivers urban folktales and piercing social commentary based on his childhood memories of playing the game, his experiences as an American immigrant, and his recent travels to World Cup cities. With choreography that incorporates South African dance moves, capoeira, and techniques from the soccer field, music that ranges from spirituals to bossa nova to beat boxing, and a vibrant background of filmed imagery, shadow play and video projection, /peh-LO-tah/ is a winning tribute to the beautiful game.

A trio of dance-focused LALA artists reveal new works about childbirth, artist audience interaction, and glamour respectively.
Ana Mendez’s Laborers is the performance of a wordless play that embodies the chaotic state of childbirth and motherhood, featuring live on-stage scoring and a surreal look behind the theater curtains, which serve as the figurative veils of realities.
A new work by choreographer Adele Myers, The Stage Show employs robust physicality, personal theatricality, and a sense of humor to navigate the mercurial chemistry between performers and their audience. Created specifically for an intimate theater in the round, Myers’ signature style of unpredictable, audience-friendly interaction will have viewers teetering on the edge of their seats.

MOAD’s 2018-19 season:
Superflex: We Are All in the Same Boat
Nov. 15, 2018 – April 22, 2019
During the last two decades, weather, global warming, and climate change have been increasingly discussed and debated. The arts have long discussed the relation and subject human versus nature, but recently the consequences of human impact, interference, and possible trigger of the twenty-first century’s climate changes have echoed within the art scene in a more activist way.
Organized by MOAD, the exhibition Superflex: We Are All in the Same Boat will be the first large-scale exhibition by the group in North America. The exhibition focuses on a body of work that deals with the economy, financial crisis, migration, and the possible consequences of global warming. The exhibition will include two new commissions—We Are All in the Same Boat and When the Levees Broke—as well as a group of video, sculpture, and installation works selected for their relevance to the City of Miami and the State of Florida.
The Danish artist collective Superflex was founded by Bjørnstjerne Christiansen, Jakob Fenger, and Rasmus Nielsen in 1993, and since then the three artists have gained international recognition for their DIY and activist approach. Superflex looks at subjects that generate discussion around migration, alternative energy, political awareness, distribution of wealth and the power of global capital. Superflex’s works are often interactive and engage the public in multiple ways. The group is best known for their humorous and playfully subversive installations and films.
Superflex is known for its interest in unifying urban spaces and commenting on society with authenticity through art. The artists describe their practice as the provision of “tools” that affect or influence a social or economic context. Previous projects include paying visitors to enter their exhibition; the development and marketing of a new beverage, Free Beer; and the production of a self-sufficient, portable biogas unit to provide energy for a family. The group’s projects are often rooted in their particular local contexts and invite visitors’ participation. Superflex works outside traditional art contexts, collaborating with designers, engineers, businesses, and marketers on projects that have the potential for social or economic change. Superflex has worked with community groups, NGOs, and large architectural companies such as Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) to realize their projects. They remain difficult to pigeonhole yet continue to innovate in their approach to current issues.
Superflex: We Are All in the Same Boat is curated by Jacob Fabricius, Artistic Director of Kunsthal Aarhus. An accompanying catalogue to be published jointly by MOAD and Hatje Cantz will reflect the exhibition’s topics. Contributing writers will reflect on how climate change, migration, and unequal distribution of wealth will influence the future of Miami. An introduction by Fabricius and MOAD Executive Director and Chief Curator Rina Carvajal will be followed by essays about the consequences of flooding, specifically the influence of water rising in Miami, by Stephanie Wakefield; about social awareness and practice in the arts by Gean Moreno; about the economy, corruption, money laundering, and the consequences of a destabilized financial system influenced by corruption by George Yudice; and a fictional text about water by science-fiction writer Mark von Schlegell.
A City of the People/La Ciudad de la Gente
Jan. 12 – Sept. 29, 2019
Part of MOAD’s groundbreaking Museum Without Boundaries initiative, an exciting cross-disciplinary series of programs, A City of the People/La Ciudad de la Gente will galvanize audiences with thoughtful and challenging performances, exhibitions, concerts, film and video screenings, readings, talks, and workshops at various venues across the city that reflect ideas of what it means to exist in, and as, an urban community. At this moment of radical polarization, cities remain at the forefront of diversity, social progressivism, and environmental responsibility. A haven for diverse immigrant communities yet among the locations most vulnerable to the effects of climate change, Miami itself stands at the leading edge of these issues. A City of the People/La Ciudad de la Gente will engage notions of urban populations, civic life, public space, citizenship, political agency, and human relations with the natural world, seeking new ways to instigate actions and conversations that may help to reimagine our cities and our lives.
A City of the People/La Ciudad de la Gente follows up Living Together, MOAD’s acclaimed year-long 2018 series that dynamically bridged the gap in programming during recent Museum renovations. Living Together brought 17 of today’s most renowned artists, musicians, writers, and thinkers to Miami for 20 separate events at 14 different venues that included MOAD, Miami Light Project, New World School for the Arts, Bill Cosford Cinema, MDC’s Wolfson Auditorium, EXILE Books, MDC Live Arts Lab, Tower Theater, and North Beach Bandshell. Events also took place on city streets and a boat in Biscayne Bay.

The objective of this project is to motivate the participating children through art, guiding them to create unique images together with the artist. Three-Dimensional Effect – Kevin Cross
Jan. 24 – April 12, 2019
Room 1105
FREE
Kevin Cross, in collaboration with Contemporary Art Projects USA, will present his exhibition “Three-Dimensional Effect.” Kevin Cross was born and raised in Limerick, Ireland. He studied business at the University of Limerick and moved to the U.S. in 1996. In 2006, he moved to New York City and studied Fine Art at Hunter College. In 2014, he began to develop a serious artistic practice and started to show his art. One intrinsic quality in his art and intellectual conception is his global openness in time and genres related with the geometric and abstraction, from master artists to emerging, from painters and printers to street muralists that he analyzes to achieve the best results on his own art. Represented by Contemporary Art Projects USA, his most recent exhibition was at Art Santa Fe 2018. His artistic influences are many, from the optical art of Bridget Riley, English b. 1931, and Julian Stanczak, Polish-American 1928–2017, to the street murals of Hamburg-based Polish artist 1010zzz and Felipe Pantone, Argentine b. 1986, based in Valencia, Spain, and the repetitive mark making of Sol LeWitt, American 1928–2007. He is also heavily influenced by rhythmic music like dub techno and dub reggae.
