Miami, July 31, 2018—Miami Dade College (MDC) has partnered with Florida International University (FIU) with the support of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, which will provide a three-year grant of $2,450,000 to maintain growth in the various disciplines of the humanities as an attractive degree and career pathway. There will be a reception to celebrate the opening of the Humanities Edge Summer H.E.ART Program and its inaugural cohort.
Under the leadership of MDC Director Adlore Casseus and FIU Director Ana Menendez, the collaborating institutions and The Humanities Edge will host 65 transitioning MDC to FIU students in its first annual Humanities Edge Summer H.E.ART Program, Aug. 6-10, at FIU’s Modesto A. Maidique campus. The History Miami themed programming will feature information sessions, a writing and career workshop, and research opportunities. The students will also participate in a historical tour of Miami’s little-known Overtown neighborhood, and a collaborative art project.
The Humanities Edge aims to create a supportive academic experience which will bring value and leverage diversity, to deepen and broaden scholarship in the humanities; strengthen transitions for aspiring humanities students from MDC to FIU; support ongoing pedagogical and research collaborations between MDC and FIU humanities faculty; and identify and drive institutional practices to support diverse humanities majors and improve student success.
