MDC’s Miami Book Fair and Books & Books Present Art Garfunkel Oct. 15

Miami Book Fair will unveil this year’s official poster at the event.

Miami, Oct. 11, 2017 Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Miami Book Fair and Books & Books will present Grammy Award-winning recording artist, actor, poet and author Art Garfunkel as he discusses his new memoir What is it All but Luminous: Notes from an Underground Man at 4 p.m., on Sunday, Oct. 15, at MDC’s Wolfson Campus. This is a ticketed event. Purchase the book at Books & Books to obtain a voucher for two tickets. In addition, the Miami Book Fair will showcase this year’s official poster, created by Lucia del Carmen Rivera Alvarez, a visual artist and graphic designer from Mexico City. The working media is welcome.

From the golden-haired, curly-headed half of the musical group Simon & Garfunkel comes a memoir (of sorts) that is artful, moving, lyrical; the making of a musician; the evolution of a man, a portrait of a life-long friendship and collaboration that became one of the most successful singing duos of their time.

Garfunkel writes about his life before, during and after Simon & Garfunkel, about their folk-rock music in the roiling age that embraced and was defined by their groundbreaking sound. He writes about growing up in the 1940s and ’50s (son of a traveling salesman), a middle class Jewish boy living in a red brick semi-attached house in Kew Gardens, Queens, a kid who was different–from the age of five feeling his vocal cords “vibrating with the love of sound.” He met Paul Simon in school, the funny guy who made him laugh. At age 12, they witnessed the birth of rock ‘n’ roll and it instantly captured them. They later recorded a demo of their song, “Hey Schoolgirl” (for $7!) and the actual record (with Paul’s father on bass) went on to #40 on the national charts, selling 150,000 copies. As Simon & Garfunkel, they took the world by storm, performing from 1963 to 1970, from the time he was 16. He also writes about acting and getting a master’s degree in mathematics from Columbia University, choosing music over a PhD, being a husband, father and more.

Garfunkel is the recipient of multiple Grammy Awards for his solo and collaborative work, including the Grammy Lifetime Achievement. In 1990, he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Garfunkel lives in New York with his wife and two children. He continues to travel around the world giving concert performances, and since 1973 has produced twelve solo albums.

Ticket holders must show their voucher and attached receipt to enter the event and claim a pre-signed copy of the book.
