MDC’s Tower Theater to Present Premiere and Sneak Preview of Moscow Never Sleeps

Miami, Sept. 1, 2017Miami Dade College’s (MDC) acclaimed Tower Theater continues its exclusive movie lineup with the Florida premiere and sneak preview of Moscow Never Sleeps on Saturday, Sept. 9, at 7 p.m.  Free cocktails and snacks, provided by co-sponsor Ella´s Oysters and Union Beer Store Little Havana, will be offered before the movie begins.   The film will return to the Tower Theater on Sept. 15, for a regular commercial run.

Moscow Never Sleeps is a multi-narrative drama about the hidden bonds that connect us all. The film dives headlong into the volatile intersections of contemporary Moscow and the intimate lives of five people: an entrepreneur whose business empire comes under siege by powerful bureaucrats, a teenage girl mired in the misery of a broken home, a young man forced to choose between his girlfriend and his grandmother, a beautiful singer torn apart by the pursuit of two men, and an ailing film star who gets embroiled in a bizarre kidnapping. Over the course of one day, their lives will change forever.

These five compelling stories weave through Moscow’s crowded cityscape as it celebrates its birthday with a massive fireworks display.  The film reveals the unrestrained energy of Europe’s biggest city as well as the cruelty and beauty of the Russian spirit as told from the unique perspective of Irish filmmaker Johnny O’Reilly, who has lived in Moscow for the last 12 years.

“Beyond the filter of geopolitics, Moscow is a city that is thriving and suffering like any other,”  said O’Reilly.  “I’m delighted that, given ongoing political dramas, this release can help U.S. audiences satisfy their curiosity about one of the world’s great capitals.”

The film stars Aleksey Serebriakov (who played the lead role in Leviathan), Evgenia Brik, Yuri Stoyanov, Lubov Aksenova, Mikhail Efremov, Anastasia Shalonko, and Oleg Dolin.   It was produced by O’Reilly and Katie Holly, and executive produced by Yevgeny Katsenelson and Ukranian-born billionaire Len Blavatnik. Moscow Never Sleeps was the first Russian film to receive majority funding from the European film fund, Eurimages, and is an official European co-production between Russia and Ireland.

O’Reilly has been working as a screenwriter and director for more than 15 years. His short film, The Terms won more than 20 awards and was shortlisted for the 2003 Oscars. He’s written and directed three feature films, including the experimental film CO/MA with Mike Figgis, and the Crimea-based film noir The Weather Station (which was released worldwide in 2011). Moscow Never Sleeps is his third feature film.
