Proclamations to be presented by leadership from the City of Miami and Miami-Dade County alongside popular entertainer and MDC alumnus, Jencarlos Canela, who will attend and deliver remarks

Miami, Aug. 28, 2017Miami Dade College will celebrate its second annual I AM MDC Day on Sept 6, marking the first day of classes when the college opened its doors in 1960 with 1,428 eager students. Also, celebrating the day with the presentation of proclamations will be leaders from Miami-Dade County and the City of Miami.  A special kick-off ceremony with the proclamation presentations will be held at MDC’s Wolfson Campus in downtown Miami, Wednesday, Sept. 6, at 10:30 a.m.  The ceremony is open to the public and will be streamed live at www.mdc.edu/iammdc.

The ceremony will also feature MDC’s President and alumnus Dr. Eduardo J. Padrón and special guest and MDC alumnus Jencarlos Canela, a renowned singer, songwriter, and actor.

I AM MDC Day celebrates the College’s tradition of providing educational opportunity to generations of South Floridians with an open door to excellence and innovation. Today, MDC is the largest and most diverse campus-based institution of higher education in the nation, with an enrollment of more than 165,000 students and more than two million alumni.

I AM MDC Day encourages the community to show their MDC pride by wearing blue on Sept 6, joining the conversation on social media using the official hashtag #IAMMDC, and making a gift online at www.mdc.edu/iammdc to support student scholarships. The first $50,000 raised will be matched dollar for dollar, thanks to a partnership with Bank of America.

Activities will take place throughout the day across MDC’s eight campuses.  MDC’s National Landmark Freedom Tower will be illuminated in blue Wednesday, Sept. 6, at sunset.

I AM MDC Day is organized by the MDC Foundation and is one of the largest College-wide fundraisers of the year. In 2016, funds raised on I AM MDC Day provided scholarships to 64 students. Scholarships from the funds raised this year will be awarded in October.
