MDC Summer Journalism Speaker Series to Host Multimedia Producer Gregory Castillo

Miami, July 3, 2017– Gregory Castillo, multimedia producer at the Dallas Museum of Art, will speak at the 2017 Miami Dade College (MDC) Summer Journalism Speaker Series at 9 a.m., Friday, July 7, at the College’s North Campus.

Castillo, who was part of the inaugural staff of The Reporter in 2010, has interned at the Miami Herald, the Dallas Morning News and WLRN as a photographer and videographer.

At The Reporter, Castillo won first-place in Sports Photography from the Associated Collegiate Press in October of 2013. In addition, he won eight first-place honors from the Florida College System Publications Association in topics such as: News Story, Feature Story, News Photo and Sports Photo.

With the Dallas Museum of Art, Castillo creates multimedia content for all the museum’s social media channels, press, and print publications. In his spare time, Castillo runs a food stand called “Croquette” at the Dallas Farmers Market selling small-batch croquetas. He lives with his fiancée and their chocolate cocker spaniel named Bastion.

The acclaimed MDC Journalism Speaker Series was launched in February 2008 to create an exchange and learning opportunity for students interested in pursuing careers in journalism. To date, 56 journalists have participated in the series.  The program includes a presentation by the journalists and a 15-minute question and answer session. All presentations are free and open to the public.

This year’s Speaker Series will run in conjunction with the MDC High School Journalism Institute, an intensive six-week dual-enrollment summer journalism program for high school students interested in careers in journalism.

During the program, students will learn how to write news and feature stories, edit video, take photographs and work on headline and caption writing. They will also produce an eight-page newspaper at the end of the semester.
