MDC’s Teatro Prometeo Takes on a Federico García Lorca Classic
Miami, June 14, 2017 – Miami Dade College (MDC)’s acclaimed Teatro Prometeo, will present Doña Rosita, the Spinster, a classic tale of love and loss from one of the most brilliant minds of Spanish theater, Federico García Lorca, from July 14 – 23 at MDC’s Koubek Theater.
Doña Rosita, the Spinster taps into our fragility, yearning, hope and despair. At the turn of the 19th century, a young woman from Granada sees her happiness truncated when her fiancée leaves for America. Despite the distance, she waits for his unlikely return—growing older and watching her dreams fade with time.
Teatro Prometeo’s treatment of the play remains true to Lorca’s original text, but offers up avant-garde blocking and movement, minimalist set design, and rich period costumes and accessories. It also emphasizes the humor within the tragic drama.
Directed by the renowned Gonzalo Rodríguez, it stars two great artistic pillars of our community, Cristina Rebull and Vivian Ruiz, alongside 13 lead actors and 10 ensemble members. But the “main character” of the play is Father Time, exhibiting his cruel and relentless passage, palpable to the audience and reinforced on the set by a Grandfather Clock centerpiece, 20 clocks on the walls, and a greenhouse upstage where nature blooms, withers and dies.
“For me, returning to direct again at Prometeo Theatre is a blessing. More than 30 years ago, I directed my first work here, Cordero de Dios (Agnes of God) and since, have always been linked to the program in one way or another,” said Gonzalo Rodriguez. “Now, returning as a director and engaging with students, I can say, that it has truly been one of the greatest experiences of my life.”
The cast of Dona Rosita consists of Cristina Rebull, Vivian Ruíz, Alejandra Cossio, Jeffry Batista, Bruno Gatti, Grethel Ortíz, Florencia Loguzzo, Magyani Medina, Mariel Corona, Shirley Álvarez, Patricia Vilá Trujillo, and Rodolfo Jape. Production design is provided by Jorge Noa and Pedro Balmaceda of Nobarte. Hair and makeup provided by Marcos Mere, and music and lighting, by the director, Gonzalo Rodriguez.
