MDC to Illuminate Freedom Tower in Orange for the UN’s International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women Nov. 25

Lighting coordinated by UN Women’s Miami Chapter

Miami, Nov. 22, 2016 Miami Dade College (MDC) will illuminate its National Historical Landmark Freedom Tower in Orange at sunset Friday, Nov. 25, to mark the United Nations General Assembly’s International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. The special lighting was requested by UN Women’s Miami Chapter. The Freedom Tower will join landmarks across the globe which will be illuminated in orange to bring awareness to the critical issue of violence against women.

One in three women around the world experience violence in their lifetime, often at the hands of someone they know, love and trust. Of all women who were victims of homicide globally in 2012, almost half were killed by intimate partners or family members. In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. In doing so, UN Member States took an historic step in accelerating the Organization’s goals on gender equality and the empowerment of women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact.
