MDC Physician Assistant Students Present Annual Project S.E.E.D. Health Fair for Migrant Farm Workers

Miami, Sept. 26, 2016Miami Dade College (MDC) physician assistant students, in collaboration with the Mexican American Council, will present the  Annual Project S.E.E.D (Serving Everyone Embracing Diversity) Health Fair for Farm Workers, a community outreach project developed by students to bring access to healthcare screenings and follow up care for migrant farm workers and their families living in Homestead. This year’s event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1, at the South Dade Center in Homestead.

For the past three years, MDC’s physician assistant students have organized this healthcare event under the supervision of Dr. Dadilia Garces Mejia to benefit an often underserved population. Last year, they served more than 500 attendees. Students will provide vision, hearing, pulmonary, urine, cholesterol, and glucose screenings, as well as HIV/STD testing, mammogram screenings, dental exams, pediatric preventative screenings, and influenza vaccines. Additionally, they offer education on obesity and the importance of lifestyle modifications, such as healthy eating and exercise.

This year’s event supporters also include City of Homestead Mayor’s Office, the Homestead Housing Authority, Baptist Hospital Homestead, the University of Miami, Community Health of South Florida, Inc., Colgate, Walgreens, the Florida Marlins, and Dr. Vijaykumar Zaveri.
