Miami Dade College’s Miami Culinary Institute Officially Welcomes New Class of Chefs

Miami, Sept. 19, 2016 – Miami Dade College’s (MDC) state-of-the-art Miami Culinary Institute (MCI) will officially induct a new class of aspiring chefs. They will receive their chef’s coats at a special ceremony at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 21, at the Wolfson Campus in downtown Miami. The keynote speaker will be restaurateur, author and TEDx speaker Chef Chris Hill

This semester, MCI will welcome its first deaf student into the culinary arts program. Born in Colombia, Joselyn Escobar dreamed of becoming a chef since she was 12 years old. She knows there will be challenges, such being aware when cooking timers go off, students walking behind her with hot pans and deliberating with team members on recipes for grading and competitions, but said she is ready to tackle anything.

“Food promotes both tolerance and diversity,” Escobar said. “It is a universal language that brings people of all backgrounds together. And, just in case, I am equipped with an abundance of note pads.”

The Chef’s Coat Ceremony marks their official welcome to the MCI. Together they will begin working toward an Associate in Science (A.S.) in Culinary Arts Management as they become a part of Miami’s dynamic gastronomic scene.
