Colombia’s Yeison Landero & Miami’s Sonora Tukukuy Prove That Cumbia Has No Borders
MIAMI BEACH, Fla., Sept.28, 2026 — Miami Dade College’s Live Arts Miami and Miami Jazz Booking team up for a night of cumbia at the Miami Beach Botanical Garden on Saturday, Oct. 17, at 7 p.m., featuring a special performance by Colombian accordionist and cumbia master Yeison Landero, as well as Miami’s own Sonora Tukukuy, with an opening vinyl DJ set by Moonbeam Mike, Tropical Tormenta System and Oro 11.
At the heart of the evening is an idea Landero captures in one of his newest compositions, “Cumbia Sin Fronteras,” a song released in 2026 that speaks to cumbia as a living tradition: rooted in Colombia, carried across generations and continually finding new audiences, communities and expressions around the world.
For Landero, that history is also deeply personal. Known as “El Heredero de la Cumbia,” he was born in San Jacinto, Bolívar, and is the grandson and musical heir of Andrés Landero, the influential accordionist known throughout Latin America as the “King of Cumbia.” From those roots in Colombia’s Montes de María, Yeison has carried cumbia sabanera to stages around the world, including the Hollywood Bowl, The Ford and the Kennedy Center. He was also an official WOMEX selection in 2025.
“Cumbia Sin Fronteras” connects that past to the present and future: the music of his grandfather traveling through a new generation, crossing geographic and cultural boundaries without losing the tradition at its core. The song was recorded alongside “Santa Lucia,” a composition by Andrés Landero, pairing grandfather and grandson across the two sides of the same 2026 release.
The performance opens Live Arts Miami’s 2026-27 season, The Art of Together, and its signature MUNDO series — both built around the idea that shared experience creates connection. Designed as a social dance event, the evening invites audiences not just to hear cumbia, but to move to it.

The evening also opens a new season of Miami Jazz Booking’s Jazz in the Jungle, with Miami’s Sonora Tukukuy bringing a distinctly local voice to the bill. The collective behind Brave New Cumbia draws from cumbia and wider Latin American traditions through the multicultural lens of contemporary Miami.
