Miami Film Festival’s Cuban Cinema Series Features a Special Presentation of the Documentary Nadie Escuchaba

Miami, Feb. 4, 2026The Cuban Cinema Series, presented by Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Miami Film Festival, will host a special screening of the landmark documentary Nadie Escuchaba at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20, at MDC’s Koubek Center.

Presented in Spanish with English subtitles, the screening is free and open to the public; RSVP is required.

Directed in 1987 by Jorge Ulla and Néstor Almendros, Nadie Escuchaba brings together extraordinary testimonies — including those of Jorge Valls, Ángel Cuadra, Esteban Luis Cárdenas, Ana Lázara Rodríguez, Ricardo Bofill, and Clara Abraham, the mother of martyr Pedro Luis Boitel — documenting the human and social consequences of repression in Cuba following Fidel Castro’s rise to power in 1959.

Through the voices of intellectuals, politicians, workers and former political prisoners, the film offers a powerful account of decades of persecution, imprisonment and systematic human rights violations that affected multiple sectors of Cuban society, including former participants in the revolutionary process as well as its opponents.

Upon its international release, Janet Maslin of The New York Times defined the film as “an urgent and painful litany. A stinging and trenchant indictment of radical chic…”

The documentary stands as a historically significant work of enduring relevance and a universal reflection on the consequences of totalitarianism, conceived as a legacy for future generations.

Néstor Almendros (1930–1992) is widely regarded as one of the world’s most influential cinematographers. After a brief career in Cuba from 1959 to 1961, he went on to work extensively in Europe and the United States, collaborating with major filmmakers. In 1976, he received the Academy Award for best cinematography for Days of Heaven.

Jorge Ulla is a key figure in Cuban exile cinema. His filmography includes In Their Own Words (1980), a documentary on the Mariel exodus, and the feature film Guaguasí (1977–1982), an anarchic comedy that Susan Sontag described as “beautiful, humane and undogmatic.” Nadie Escuchaba marked his first collaboration with Almendros.
