Miami, Sept. 10, 2025 – Miami Dade College (MDC), in collaboration with The Women’s Breast & Heart Initiative (WBHI), invites the community to lace up for the 9th Annual Pink Walk 5K Run and Walk on Sunday, Sept. 21, at 6:50 a.m. at MDC North Campus. MDC is hosting the Pink Walk as part of its annual Changemaker Week 2025, a dynamic, week-long series of over 70 events across all eight campuses in support of the College’s commitment to changemaker education, mobilizing the community, inspiring collective action, and driving impact that lasts far beyond the week.
The Pink Walk kicks off at 7:30 a.m. at MDC North Campus’ Science Complex. To warm up before the walk begins, MDC students, faculty, and staff have arranged the largest “Boots on the Ground” Breast Cancer 5K Walk and Run line dance.
The Pink Walk is dedicated to saving lives by equipping at-risk women, college students, and underserved communities with vital tools and resources to fight breast cancer and heart disease.
“Breast cancer touches all of us—whether personally or through loved ones,” said Miami Dade College President Madeline Pumariega. “As a breast cancer survivor, I know firsthand how critical early detection and awareness can be. The Pink Walk is more than a race—it’s a celebration of life and resilience, and a reminder that together we can make a difference. I encourage everyone to join us in this important cause.”
Breast cancer remains the most common cancer among women in the United States, aside from skin cancers, accounting for about 30% (1 in 3) of all new female cancers each year. According to the American Cancer Society’s 2025 estimates, 316,950 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women; 59,080 new cases of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) will be diagnosed and 42,170 women will lose their lives to breast cancer. While the disease primarily affects middle-aged and older women—the median age at diagnosis is 62—it can also strike younger women, with a small percentage diagnosed before age 45.
