Miami, May 1, 2025 – The Cuban Cinema Series, presented by Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Miami Film Festival, resumes this month with the documentary “The Walker,” directed by Raúl Francisco Dorticós, about the distinguished Cuban artist Humberto Castro. The screening will take place at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 9, at MDC’s Koubek Center. The screening, presented in Spanish with English subtitles, is free and open to the public with RSVP.
Castro is an internationally acclaimed artist and his work is considered among the most original and important in contemporary Ibero-American art. His career began in Havana as part of the iconoclastic avant-garde known as the “Generation of the Eighties,” which shook the foundations of authoritarian art standards. He emigrated to Paris in 1989 and settled in the U.S. ten years later. He excels in a variety of visual art forms including painting, drawing, printmaking, ceramics, installations, and set design for theater and film.
“The Walker” is a highly engaging and dynamic exploration of his personal life, as well as the Neofigurative aesthetic that defines his work. Dorticós, renown for telling stories through irreverent imagery as both a photographer and filmmaker, studied in Havana and has gained recognition for various photo series. “The Walker” is his first documentary.
