College Spring Dances Offers Engaging Choreographies

4 dancers dancing on stage with 2 leaping in the air.

The New World School of the Arts dance division presents Spring Dances, a varied and exciting program of dances – like Paul Taylor’s thrilling 1975 masterwork, Esplanade, set to the music of J.S. Bach and David Parsons’ witty and enigmatic work, The Envelope, a 1984 choreography that demonstrates “that humor can be a wonderful part of the contemporary concert dance.”

“Performing works by renowned choreographers provides NWSA dancers with the invaluable opportunity to inhabit these masterworks, to understand them compositionally, and to meet the demands of skill and artistry that they require.”

Mary Lisa Burns, Dean of Dance at NWSA

There will also be new works by faculty members Francisco Graciano and Jeffrey Lloyd Smith, as well as by NWSA alumnus, and former Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater member and Resident Choreographer, Jamar Roberts. From classics to contemporary new works, with music from Philip Glass to Gioachino Rossini, the program promises to be engaging and exciting.

New World School of the Arts dance training is conservatory-based, grounded in classical ballet, and incorporating dances of different cultures and newer forms. Supporting studies are in choreography, music, dance history, anatomy and kinesiology, dance on camera, movement analysis and dance production. NWSA is recognized internationally for the success and artistry of its professional alumni, for its distinguished professional faculty, outstanding dance curriculum, productive relationship with many international and national ballet and modern dance companies, the multi-cultural nature of our faculty and student body, and excellent facilities provided for dance.
