With the support of global superstars Gloria and Emilio Estefan and other community leaders, Miami Dade College launched the philanthropic campaign for its iconic Freedom Tower, which turns 100 next year.

While the National Historic Landmark is currently closed for renovations, Miami Dade College is transforming it into a world-class visitor experience and permanent exhibition to serve as a dynamic repository of Miami’s story.

“The Freedom Tower means so much to this community as a symbol of hope, freedom and opportunity,” Miami Dade College President Madeline Pumariega said at the kickoff, held at the Art Deco Cardozo Hotel and hosted by the Estefans.

“It tells the story of Miami, of those who came to this country seeking the American dream and worked hard to create a brighter future. Tonight, we proudly introduce the esteemed members of the Centennial Committee and pledge to honor and preserve the Tower’s legacy for many more years to come.”

A New Experience
When the building reopens in late 2025, visitors will see multimedia exhibitions that will allow them to immerse themselves in the Freedom Tower’s history, including its role as the headquarters of the Miami News, as well as the home of the Cuban Refugee Center, which welcomed hundreds of thousands of Cuban exiles to the United States. Visitors will have the chance to share their own stories as well.

In addition, the Tower will house the Kislak Center, a FIFA Museum exhibit and art galleries curated by the Museum of Art and Design (MOAD) at MDC.

By supporting the architecturally stunning building through various avenues, including contributions, donors will ensure that its profound historical and cultural significance remains accessible for future generations.
