Miami, Nov. 15, 2024 – Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Miami Film Festival continues its popular Cuban Cinema Series with “Juan de los Muertos,” a zombie comedy-horror set in Havana, Cuba. The film will be presented at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 5, at MDC’s Koubek Center. Free and open to the public with registration.
Directed by Alejandro Brugués, “Juan de los Muertos” tells the story of the sudden appearance of zombies in Havana, which the Cuban regime immediately labels as dissidents and the imperialist enemy. Juan and his crony friend, Lazaro, make the most of the circumstances by establishing a business where families can get rid of their aggressive zombie relatives with the slogan “Juan of the Dead: we kill your loved ones.”
The film satirizes the absurdity of totalitarian society through the horror genre and one of its most popular variants – the living dead. The film stars Alexis Díaz de Villegas, Jorge Molina and Jazz Vilá, among others.
Brugués was born in Argentina and raised in Cuba, where he studied at San Antonio de los Baños School. His other films include “The Inheritance” (2024) and “Personal Belongings” (2006). He currently lives in Los Angeles.
