MUSEUM OF ART AND DESIGN AT MDC PRESENTS GEOVANNA GONZALEZ: FLOWING PATHWAYS, A NEW COMMISSIONED WORK FOR THE MOAD PAVILIONS SERIES

Miami, August 28, 2024 – The Museum of Art and Design (MOAD) at Miami Dade College (MDC) presents GeoVanna Gonzalez: Flowing Pathways, the third installment of MOAD Pavilions, a series of public art installations. Designed by Miami-based artist GeoVanna Gonzalez, Flowing Pathways will be located at the Third Street entrance of Building 1 Plaza at MDC Wolfson Campus starting Nov. 22, 2024. MOAD will host a VIP reception and live performance centered around Flowing Pathways for Miami Art Week on Friday, Dec. 6, 2024, from 9 – 11 a.m. Working media is welcome.

Much like a river carves its path, Flowing Pathways invites viewers to reflect on their journeys and the experiences that shape them. The installation features interconnected geometric frames that evoke urban structures alongside shapes reminiscent of rivers and waterways. This contrast between rigidity and fluidity creates a thought-provoking experience, encouraging curiosity as visitors move through and around the installation.

“MOAD is honored to present the artist’s work as the third iteration of the Pavilion series,” said Dr. Amy Galpin, MOAD’s Executive Director and Chief Curator. “GeoVanna Gonzalez is an incredible thinker whose practice examines intricate relationships between movement, architecture, and the environment. Her bold forms, minimal forms intervene in public spaces in unexpected ways and encourage viewers to reconsider their own relationships to both space and place.”

Flowing Pathways will be inaugurated during the Miami Book Fair (Nov. 17–24, 2024). Additional public programs will include tours of the installation, artmaking classes and more, to be announced on MOAD’s website and social media channels.

“My pavilion, Flowing Pathways, draws inspiration from the significance of rivers—their historical importance, spiritual depth, and cultural resonance in Miami and the Caribbean. Through my pavilion I aim to evoke a place for contemplation, reflection and connectivity to the place we call home,” Gonzalez said.

Born and raised in Los Angeles, California, Gonzalez earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Otis College of Art and Design and is the recipient of several awards including the South Arts Southern Prize and State Fellowship, WaveMaker Grant, and the Ellie Visual Arts Award. Her work strives to connect private and public space through interventionist, participatory art with an emphasis on collaboration and collectivity. Through her work she addresses the shifting notions of gender and identity, intimacy, and proximity.

GeoVanna Gonzalez: Flowing Pathways is the third in a series of commissioned MOAD Pavilions, curated by Isabela Villanueva, MOAD Curator. Previous artists include Rafael Domenech’s Estuary [Pavilion for MOAD] and Germane Barnes: Ukhamba.

MOAD’s programs are made possible with the support of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners. They are sponsored in part by the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Arts and Culture, the Florida Council on Arts and Culture, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
