MDC North Campus and Facebook Join Forces to Offer Tech Prep Workshop

Miami, June 13, 2016- Miami Dade College’s (MDC) North Campus will partner with Facebook to provide a 2-hour interactive computer science workshop for the residents of Miami-Dade County on Thursday, June 23, at 5:30 pm.   The event is free and open to the public.

The workshop provides a detailed introduction to using TechPrep, a career panel featuring Facebook employees.  Through the workshop, students will have an opportunity to practice coding and access a resource fair featuring local computer science-related organizations.

“We are helping to inspire young minds from Miami’s urban communities to take the plunge into coding and programming.  By providing access to powerful resources like programmers at Facebook and industry-based fairs, we are breaking down barriers for students and parents alike,” said Dr. Malou C. Harrison, North Campus’ president.

TechPrep is a free online resource hub available in both English and Spanish to help parents, guardians, and students from underrepresented communities explore programming, the jobs available to programmers and the skills required to become one. During the workshop, Facebook employees will talk with parents, guardians, and students of all ages about how they started studying computer science and the resources available to help students begin studying it as well.
