MDC Tower Theater Presents Zhang Yimou’s The Flowers of War

The film is being shown in Miami exclusively at the Tower Theater

Miami, April 3, 2012
Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Tower Theater, in collaboration with the Confucius Institute at MDC, will present the exclusive Miami premiere of The Flowers of War, the long-awaited film from Chinese director Zhang Yimou  (Ju Dou, Raise the Red Lantern, Hero, House of Flying Daggers), starring Oscar-winning actor Christian Bale. The premiere will be heldat 8:45 p.m. Friday, April 13.

Scarce in the local art scene, Chinese films have become one of the main sources of high-quality international films programmed by art cinema houses worldwide. Starting with the release of Zhang Yimou’s visually stunning film, The Flowers of War, the Confucius Institute and the Tower Theater have agreed to collaborate in the promotion of new Chinese films in Miami.

A 2012 Golden Globe nominee and Official Selection (out of competition) at this year’s Berlin International Film Festival, The Flowers of War, by the most internationally renowned Chinese filmmaker, is the most expensive Chinese movie ever made.

In 1937, Nanking stands at the forefront of a war between China and Japan. As the invading Japanese Army overruns China’s capital city, desperate civilians seek refuge behind the nominally protective walls of a cathedral. John Miller (Christian Bale), an American trapped amidst the chaos of the occupation, takes shelter. He is joined by a group of innocent schoolgirls and 13 courtesans, equally determined to escape the horrors of war. Posing as a priest, he attempts to lead the women to safety.

Michael Dequina, from The Movie Report, has affirmed that The Flowers of War is “what Zhang Yimou really does best – the epic scale of intimate human emotion.”

Following the April 13 premiere, the film will be shown at the Tower Theater through Thursday, April 26. Tickets may be purchased atwww.mdc.edu/tower.

Tickets are $8 for the general public; $7 for MDC students and staff, seniors, and Miami Film Society members; $6 for Tower Theater patrons with valid 5-ticket package and guests of the Confucius Institute (promotion code will be requested at the box office).

The Tower Theater at MDC has been dubbed as one of the “10 great places to see a movie in splendor” by USA Today.

Free parking is available in the public lots behind the theater.
