MIAMI, March 22, 2024 – Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Koubek Center is accepting applications for its annual artist in residency program, En Residencia, through April 30. Local artists are eligible regardless of their discipline or stage of their career. Those selected will be notified in June, at which time they can begin their residencies.
As part of the program, residents will have access to classrooms and the rehearsal studio at the Center to develop new work. Residents will also have the opportunity to participate in one of the Center’s many programs and activities on a case-by-case basis.
En Residencia was launched in July 2021 with the goal of nurturing Miami’s cultural ecosystem by engaging local artists and facilitating the dialogue between creators and the local community.
“En Residencia is a pillar of the Koubek Center’s mission of building community through the arts,” said Melissa Messulam, the Center’s manager. “Through this program, we hope to provide a space that inspires artists to be creative, helps them sustain their practice, generates new possibilities and fosters connections with each other and the community.”
The current group of residents includes Osmany Torres (photography), Darmyn Calderon (Video and film), Justin Long (Visual arts), Queca Gordillo (Theater); Renee Chavez (Music), Miami Bloco (Music); Adolfo Herrera (Music), Catalina Arenas (Theater) and Keba Williams (Music).
The membership fee for En Residencia is $200 and is valid for a year. During that time, artists can use the classrooms and limited studio spaces, which range between 400 and 750 square feet. The spaces will be available Monday through Friday, from 9 am to 8 pm. Artists may block spaces for up to two months per project, with a maximum of two projects per year. The Koubek Center will consider flexibility regarding the length of individual residencies on a case-by-case basis.
