MDC’s Miami Book Fair Offers Free Online Creative Writing + Performance Workshops for Teens

Miami, Feb. 3, 2024 – Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Miami Book Fair is offering a workshop series to help teens shape their unique writing and spoken voice. Register now for the 2024 Speak Up creative writing workshop series, Feb. 10 – March 23, designed for Miami-Dade County teens in grades 6 – 12. The seven-week virtual program is free of charge.

The series kicks off on Saturday, Feb. 10, with Ebony LaDelle, the author of Love Radio—which was People magazine’s best book of the summer, a 2023 Audie Award Finalist, a 2023 Michigan Notable Book, Apple Books’ best book of 2022, an Amazon’s Editor Pick and was featured on The Today Show.

Teens (ages 13-19) will engage in brainstorming activities, craft exercises and writing workshops, working closely with professional writers and teaching artists to develop their skills through interactive sessions focused on different genres. Established poets, graphic novelists, fiction authors and other professionals will encourage students through the creative writing process. No previous writing experience necessary.

From drafting to performance to publishing, the workshops provide an invaluable opportunity to empower youths through community-based writing activities.
