Miami, Nov. 8, 2023 – For the third consecutive year, Miami Dade College’s (MDC) student newspaper, The Reporter, has been awarded a national Pacemaker award by the Associated Collegiate Press in the two-year college newspaper category.
The honors were announced on Oct. 30 at the ACP/College Media Association Fall National College Media Convention held in Atlanta, Georgia. The Pacemakers are considered the top prize in student journalism.
Judging was based on content, writing, editing, design and photography. Winners were selected based on work published during the 2022-23 school year. To be judged, the paper submitted three issues.
“I’m very happy to have been part of this achievement,” said Juan S. Gomez, who served as the paper’s editor-in-chief last year. “My mission as editor was always to uphold the excellence and dedication The Reporter embodies. Receiving our third Pacemaker in a row validates that.”
The Reporter has won five Pacemaker awards in total since its inception in 2010. It won the prize in 2013, 2014, 2021 and 2022 and has been a finalist eight of the last thirteen years.
“Winning this honor is amazing,” said Nikole Valiente, The Reporter’s current editor-in-chief. “It’s a testament to the dedication and commitment of our team, not only in the last year, but since the paper’s inception.”
