This expansion will provide tuition for students to learn app development with Apple’s Swift programming language at three MDC campuses.
Miami, Sept. 7, 2023 – After successfully implementing Miami Codes during the 2022-23 academic year, Miami Dade College (MDC) is expanding the program to increase the number of underrepresented students with app development skills for iOS to three additional MDC campuses this Fall semester.
Miami Codes is supported by Apple through its Community Education Initiative. The company covers the tuition and certification costs of app development credit, non-credit and summer camp courses that will allow high school students, college students and working professionals to learn its Swift programming language free of cost.
“We are excited to continue collaborating with Apple to provide our local community with new pathways to employment in high-paying jobs,” said MDC President Madeline Pumariega. “This partnership is an example of MDC’s commitment to innovate and train the workforce of tomorrow, while fueling the talent needs of a global economy.”
Participants who complete the available courses and training will be able to showcase their apps at a local Apple store and apply for paid internships with local companies. They will also receive employability and entrepreneurship workshops provided by MDC Works and Idea Center at MDC.
Miami Codes will implement multiple pathways to expose, teach and certify students in app development with Swift at no cost. As part of the expansion, MDC will offer the program at three different campuses: West, Kendall and North campuses. The academic offerings will include three options:
- iOS app development credit courses from MDC’s School of Engineering and Technology’s Mobile App Development degree. Tuition, fees and certification cost for the courses will be covered for Miami-Dade County residents.
- Upskilling courses through MDC’s School of Continuing Education & Professional Development for underrepresented individuals interested in learning Swift.
- Summer camp for high school students to explore iOS app development using Apple’s Swift Playgrounds and its Everyone Can Create guide, designed to ignite creativity and collaboration in coding.
