Miami Dade College Hosts Ceremony for 300 New Presidential Scholars

MDC hosted an induction ceremony for 300 incoming Presidential Scholars on Tuesday, August 15, at MDC’s Kendall Campus. The group will be inducted by The Honorable Nushin G. Sayfie, Chief Judge, Miami-Dade Circuit Court. CNN News Central Anchor and MDC alumnus Boris Sanchez delivered opening remarks.

Sanchez is a CNN anchor based in Washington, DC. and currently co-anchors CNN News Central from 1-4 p.m. Since joining the network in 2015, Sanchez has taken a leading role in coverage of major events, including presidential elections, protests and mass shootings. Previously, Sanchez co-anchored “New Day Weekend” and served as a national correspondent in Miami and New York.

A Hialeah native, he earned an associate degree from MDC. Sanchez graduated from Syracuse University in 2009 with bachelor’s degrees in broadcast journalism and international relations.

The Presidential Scholars program awards competitive scholarships to high school students based on academic achievement. The scholarships cover tuition and fees, plus a stipend for living expenses. Scholars also have access to unique co-curricular experiences and opportunities, including career preparation, leadership development, academic research, civic engagement trips, social events and more.
