MDC Partners with McKinsey Social Initiative to Bridge the Youth Unemployment Gap in South Florida

Miami, March 30, 2016 – The Idea Center at Miami Dade College (MDC) will have as its next guest for its dynamic Pioneers @ MDC lecture series Dr. Helene D. Gayle, Global CEO of the McKinsey Social Initiative (MSI). Her presentation will take place at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, April 7.

A dynamic force in global thinking, Dr. Gayle was featured in Forbes as the 78th most powerful woman in the world. Under her leadership, MSI devotes their efforts to addressing complex global and social challenges. Dr. Gayle will speak to the larger ambition of helping millions of unemployed and underemployed youth with a blueprint that can be adopted anywhere in the world, starting right here in South Florida. Dr. Gayle will discuss the provocative thinking needed to strengthen the ties between the community and employers to create opportunities for South Florida’s graduates.

McKinsey Social Initiative (MSI), an independent non-profit founded by McKinsey & Company, has partnered with The Idea Center at MDC to introduce Generation to South Florida. Generation seeks to close the skills gap and improve the employment prospects for the most populous generation in history. The program is determined to solve the problem of youth unemployment with a goal of connecting one million young people with skills and jobs across five countries over the next five years. In the city of Miami, the Generation boot camp training program bridges the gap by providing students the technical, behavioral, and mindset skills to succeed in IT and Retail/Hospitality entry-level positions.

“We are thrilled to partner with the top consulting firm in the world to offer an innovative pathway to an IT career, engaging top national and local employers,” says Leandro Finol, Executive Director of The Idea Center at MDC.

In partnership with The Idea Center, GenerationIT recently launched its 1st cohort of 25 students and was met with great enthusiasm by the student community. Generation Miami’s Retail/Hospitality program is currently running its 3rd cohort of 27 students, and has already graduated 57 students with 90%+ continued employment rates after 3 months on the job.
