Miami, Sept. 24, 2021 – As part of its institutional commitment to changemaker education, Miami Dade College’s (MDC) eight campuses will once again host voter registration events on National Voter Registration Day (NVRD), Tuesday, Sept. 28, to encourage everyone to sign up to vote. Events are free and open to the public.
Having participated in NVRD since its inception in 2012, this year MDC will offer in-person voting registration drives at every campus and the webinar A Power to the (Young) People – Why Local Elections Matter. The College will also provide resources, such as the one-stop election ready website mdc.edu/vote, where students can register, check their status, update their address, and find details about upcoming elections and MDC-Motivote, a nonpartisan digital platform that helps students get ready to vote, build long-term civic habits, and compete for points and prizes.
NVRD seeks to create broad awareness of voter registration opportunities to reach tens of thousands of voters who may not register otherwise. According to U.S. Census data from 2020, as many as 1 in 4 eligible Americans are not registered to vote.
Every year, millions of Americans find themselves unable to vote because they miss a registration deadline, don’t update their registration, or aren’t sure how to register. NVRD wants to make sure everyone has the opportunity to vote.
Partners for this year’s event include the League of Women Voters of Miami-Dade County, Engage Miami, Catalyst Miami, Motivote, Campus Vote Project, the Andrew Goodman Foundation, and the Campus Election Engagement Project.
