Miami, FL, July 6, 2021 – Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Wolfson Campus Opera/Musical Theatre Ensemble will perform Jason Robert Brown’s “Songs for a New World” July 7-9 at 8 p.m. and July 10-11 at 2 and 8 p.m. Performances will be streamed only.
Under the direction of Amy Davis, director of Vocal Studies at Wolfson Campus, and accompanist and music director Eden Marte, “Songs for a New World” is a contemporary song cycle that weaves characters and history together, illuminating the timelessness of self-discovery. The first musical from American composer and Tony Award-winner, Jason Robert Brown, this moving collection of powerful songs examines life, love and the choices that we make. Brown transports his audience from the deck of a 1492 Spanish sailing ship to a ledge, 57 stories above Fifth Avenue, to meet a startling array of characters that range from a young man who has determined that basketball is his ticket out of the ghetto to a woman whose dream of marrying rich nabs her the man of her dreams… and a soulless marriage.
This special presentation of “Songs for a New World” is through a collaboration with Music Theatre International (MTI), who supplied all authorized performance materials.
The Department of Arts and Philosophy at MDC Wolfson Campus’ music program encompasses a variety of ensembles, including opera/musical theatre ensemble, college choir, chamber music ensembles, gospel and the jazz ensemble.
