Miami, February 12, 2014 – There are few countries along the Caribbean Basin that haven’t been influenced by Chinese migration. As an effort to foster international understanding and explore the role that Chinese immigrants played in the development of Caribbean cultures, the prestigious Confucius Institute (CI)at Miami Dade College is hosting its 3rd Annual Forum on Chinese Migration to the Caribbean Basin at 7 p.m., Friday, Feb. 14, at the Kendall Campus. The event is free and open to the public and refreshments will be provided.
The focus of this year’s forum will rest on Jamaica and Panama. Co-organized by the Chinese Cultural Foundation Inc., the forum convenes leading educators and professionals across the Americas and the Caribbean to share their research with the public. Discussion will provide first-person accounts of what it means to grow up Chinese in the Caribbean, as well as a historical overview of the Caribbean countries with the greatest Chinese influence. Attendees will have the opportunity to interact with historians, social commentators and many others who through the years have amassed unique experiences in a multicultural context.
Dr. Keith Lowe, an internationally acclaimed exponent of multiculturalism and programming coordinator of the forum, will be one of the featured keynote speakers. He’s a distinguished graduate of Harvard and Stanford universities and the recipient of the 2002 Canadian government’s Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal for his career-long commitment to education, public service and the formation of inclusive, multicultural communities.
