MDC’s North Campus Hosts South Florida TRIO Day to Celebrate the Success of Students

Miami, Feb. 23, 2017- Miami Dade College’s (MDC) North Campus and the South Florida TRIO Advisory Council will welcome students from throughout Miami-Dade County to the 2017 National TRIO Day Celebration and Expo on Saturday, Feb. 25.

This event will commemorate the more than 50 year existence of TRIO programs in the U.S. and their significance to providing educational opportunities to the underserved. The day will include leadership development and civic engagement workshops plus a successful alumni panel discussion. The celebration will bring together TRIO students from MDC, Florida International University, Florida Memorial University, the Miami Museum of Science, and St Thomas University.

“TRIO Day presents a prime opportunity to come together as a community around educational access and attainment, while impressing upon our youth the growing value of a postsecondary credential” stated North Campus President Dr. Malou C. Harrison.

The United States Congress established a series of programs to help low-income Americans enter college, graduate and move on to participate more fully in America’s economic and social life. These programs are funded under Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 and are referred to as the TRIO Programs (initially just three programs).  There are now seven programs serving over 800,000 students at close to 1,400 colleges and universities throughout the U.S.
